Dr. Denis Masika
Dr. Denis Masika is a highly accomplished and versatile professional with over 15 years of dedicated experience in hydrology, water resources management, environmental science, and academia. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Maseno University, where his research focused on simulation modeling for water allocation, complemented by an M.Sc. in Hydrology and a B.Ed. (Science). His career is a unique blend of in-depth academic knowledge and practical, impactful fieldwork. As a Lecturer at Maseno University, he trains the next generation of scientists by teaching postgraduate and undergraduate courses in GIS, Hydrology, and Water Resources Management.
His research, supported by a strong publication record, explores critical issues such as land-use change, the effects of climate change, and indigenous water management practices. Dr. Masika's practical experience is extensive, having served as a Water Resource Data Analyst for a major World Bank-funded flood mitigation project. In this role, he coordinated the collection of hydro-meteorological data, managed SQL and ArcGIS databases, and played a key role in developing and evaluating community-driven catchment management plans.
He also worked as a Hydrologist for the Kenya Water Resources Advisor Project under Koei Africa Co., Ltd, funded by JICA. This field experience is further bolstered by his recent qualification in Data Science and Business Analytics from the University of Texas at Austin, equipping him with advanced skills in Python, machine learning, and data visualization to tackle complex environmental challenges with modern analytical rigor. He is a proven expert in hydrological modeling (WEAP, HEC-HMS), participatory community development, project planning, and monitoring & evaluation.
Dr. Masika is a dynamic professional whose integrated knowledge of environmental systems, data science, and community engagement makes him a valuable asset in the pursuit of sustainable water resource management and climate resilience.
